Littlefields + Orchestra
Oct 15, 2021 | Austin, TX
In the morning we went to Pease park and Erika tried to feed a squirrel. Later, Brian took us to a place he saw a few days prior, called Littlefield’s. It was a cute outdoor spot bordered with a white picket fence and lots of tables and some grassy areas for children to play in. There was a permanently-parked Littlefield’s coffee truck as well as a Veracruz taco truck. We got vegan queso sauce (which was amazing) and some tortilla chips. We both ordered 2 tacos, too. The people before us left a comically large amount of full salsa cups on our table, but we didn’t need them. The tacos were large and very good. There also looked to be a snow cone truck there that was not open. We saw a mosquito stuck and dead in a glob of something and thought the shadow looked weird and cool.
In the evening, we went to the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Once we got there, we realized there was a beautiful, large balcony where everyone was hanging out before the show. The local astronomy group (organization?) were there with their professional telescopes to let us all look at the moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. You could so clearly see the rings of Saturn. While looking at the moon through the telescope, you could see a bat fly across every now and again. We had a couple drinks and then walked up the couple flights of stairs to the auditorium. The orchestra performed a few random pieces, some by Gustav Holst and some not. Then, they performed The Planets orchestral suite by Holst. The maestro was pretty funny to watch since he was so serious and dramatic but also very, very talented.
We tried to find a place to go eat and get a drink afterwards but couldn’t find any place that was open that wasn’t a dive bar or something a little too rambunctious for us. We ended up trying Gibson Street Bar because I remembered how cool it looked on the outside. It was decorated for Halloween with big fake teeth above the front entrance. The parking in the back of the bar was horribly cramped and Brian had a really hard time parking because the spot was so narrow. Erika had to really squeeze to get out of her side of the car. Once inside, it was so packed with people and so, so loud. There were about three rows of people at the bar so it looked nearly impossible to order a drink anytime soon. We walked to their outside balcony to check it out, still packed with people. Then we went down the back stairs to see their ground-level hang out spot which had some turf and tables, not as packed with people. We decided that this place just wasn’t for us that night, and had to somehow maneuver the aforementioned parking space. Brian expertly executed the task even if he had to give it a few tries, all while other cars were waiting on the street to pull into the parking lot. We went home and ate some random food and soon after, we went to bed.
