Downtown Austin: Monsters, Old Toys, & Beer!
Sep 23, 2021 | Austin, TX
We went to check out west 6th street. We went to the Museum of the Weird which was truly weird. It was very campy and lame to say the least. It also took us about 20 minutes to even buy a ticket because the shop guy was stuck talking to 2 old ladies about ghost hunting forever and ignoring us and the other 4 people in line. We didn’t take any pictures at this museum, but Brian filmed it all on his GoPro. Erika bought a cool/creepy enamel pin (update from the future: she sadly lost it a few months later when it secretly fell off of her jacket). Basically, this "museum" had a bunch of fake, stuffed creatures. Just some of the usual stuff you see at odd shops like this one: a couple mummies, shrunken heads, creepy dolls that people claim to have seen come to life, and of course the infamous two-headed <input any animal here>. There was one unique aspect to this particular museum, however. They had a giant frozen block of ice tucked away in a special room of its own. filming and photographs were 100% NOT ALLOWED in this room. As I'm sure you can guess, Brian did anyway, cause that was a dummy rule. The creature was called the "Minnesota Iceman". There are plenty of old rumors about it/him, and I'm sure you can read alllll about it online. All-in-all, I give the Minnesota Iceman a 1/10 on the realness scale.
After, we went to a better museum which was a toy museum with toys from the 80’s and 90’s. Simply named, The Texas Toy Museum. They also had a bunch of retro games in the back you could play unlimitedly with your museum entry price. We played the TMNT arcade game. We walked to a place called Hoboken Pie and got a vegan pizza and vegan garlic knots. Then we went and got Belgian beers at Mort Subite Belgian Beer Bar and liked the interesting glass that one of them was served in. They had a different glass for each one of their beers on tap, with the name of each beer painted differently on each glass.
